Symphony Orchestra at Schools Music Festival
On Sunday August 10, the Bendigo Colleges Symphony Orchestra,
accompanied by Jane Mayo and Pam Scott, travelled by bus to the Robert
Blackwood Hall to participate in the Melbourne Strings Festival, which
is part of the Melbourne Bands Festival.
We left Bendigo at 2pm, and arrived at the Robert Blackwood Hall in time
to watch a performance of the Ballarat Colleges Symphony Orchestra,
which is made up of students from secondary colleges all over Ballarat.
Our orchestra was then taken backstage to tune up and listen to a pep
talk from our conductor Josh Geddes.
The Orchestra performed three pieces - Take 5, Wagner's March from
"Lohengrin", and finished with a medley of Green Day hits. Malcolm
Yeung, head of strings from Caulfield Grammar then went up on the stage
to take a tutorial. Our orchestra was well prepared for their
performance and played well, and achieved all the challenges put to them
by both Josh and Malcolm Yeung. They continue to develop as a group, in
the increasing difficulty of the music they are playing, in the standard
of their playing, and in their pride in their accomplishments. We were
awarded a Bronze Shield for our performance at the Melbourne Strings
Festival.
This term has seen a growth in the string section, and the orchestra now
numbers 35 students and still growing!
